US MASTERS HISTORY
Annually playing host to the US Masters – the first of the four major tournaments of the new season – the Augusta National course is the brightest jewel in Georgia’s deep south crown courtesy of a plethora of dogwoods and pines that line nigh on every dramatically sculptured hole, whilst a cornucopia of magnificent azaleas serve as a constant reminder as to one of the world’s most famous golf course’s heritage that’s also steeped in a resplendent horticultural history of its own.
The 365-acre tract off Washington Road was identified as an indigo plantation back in the 1800s, which went unchanged until 1857 when a Belgian dignitary purchased the sizeable plot and with the help of his family embarked on opening a commercial nursery on the site. Importing a diverse range of trees and plants from far and wide the Fruitland Nurseries became renowned for popularizing many species of flora and fauna, before a death in the family resulted in a pivotal change of ownership and the seeds of a golfing legacy were instead sewn.
Step forward a certain Bobby Jones, winner of the major golfing tournament’s grand slam in 1930 he retired at the peak of his powers to concentrate his efforts on constructing what he envisaged as the ultimate championship course. Identifying the former nursery as the ideal location to bring his vision to fruition he was quoted as saying, “Perfect. And to think this ground has been lying here all these years waiting for someone to come along and lay a golf course on it,” when first clapping eyes on the vacant land.
In his bid to create the iconic course we see today, Jones even enlisted the son of the Belgian nursery owner in the capacity of consultant to help determine the most pertinent locations for individual plants and flowers to be placed in relation to the architectural layout of the course, literally leaving no stone unturned. That’s why today we discover each and every hole at Augusta National takes its name from the distinctive plant that’s best illustrated from tee to fairway to green. ‘Flowering Peach, Yellow Jasmine, Carolina Cherry, Golden Bell, Firethorn, Redbud, Nandina’ and ‘Flowering Crab Apple’ offering all the description you need.
Aside from in excess of 80,000 plants numbering 350 varieties, a collection of palm trees can be found on the property too, amid the hundreds of pine trees – some examples of which are 150+ years old – dogwoods, magnolias, oaks, wisteria vine, unique privet and over 30 strains of Augusta’s trademark flowering azalea.
